Carragher backing for Torres

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher backed Fernando Torres to be a success for Chelsea after spoiling the Spain striker's Blues debut by helping the Merseysiders triumph 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Raul Meireles hooked home from close range after 68 minutes to secure three points for Kenny Dalglish's visitors - moments after Torres had been replaced by Salomon Kalou. Carragher told Sky Sports 1: "Good players come and go. "We've played against plenty of players (who have left)... we used to play against Robbie Fowler when he went to Leeds... it's not easy. You know the quality. "Fernando is one of the best strikers in the world and I'm sure he'll prove that for Chelsea but he's not with us now. We've got to focus on our own team, do our own jobs and that's what we did." Me: Liverpool are more stronger under Dalglish. No doubt about it. Congrats to The Kop.

Liverpool have agreed a fee for Fernando Torres with Chelsea thought to be in the region of £50million and have given the striker permission to speak to the club. Speculation has raged over whether the Spanish striker will conclude a move to the Premier League champions before the transfer window closes on Monday night. And it now seems the 26-year-old is on the brink of completing a last-minute switch after the two clubs settled on a towering price for his signature following the Blues' failed £35m offer earlier this week. Liverpool confirmed on their official website: "Liverpool Football Club tonight confirmed they have agreed a fee with Chelsea for the sale of Fernando Torres. "The player has now been given permission to speak to the London club."
